President Donald Trump announced Monday that a new granite helipad will be built on the White House South Lawn, the latest in an ambitious and sometimes controversial series of construction projects aimed at giving the White House and Washington, D.C., a fresh makeover. Trump told reporters at the White House that the landing pad was necessary because the next generation of Marine One helicopters damages the lawn every time they land. “It’s not that the grass gets discolored—it gets ripped out,” he said, adding that the pad would feature a 100-foot-wide White House seal carved into granite.
