NASA Seeks Commercial Partners on Lunar Fission Reactor Plan

NASA is looking for proposals from commercial enterprises interested in building the first lunar fission reactor. The agency’s draft Announcement for Partnership Proposals, or AFPP, calls for ideas on creating a 100-kilowatt (at minimum) nuclear reactor on the Moon that could be ready to launch by 2029. NASA has been pushing for a lunar-based fission reactor for several years now, but it accelerated plans this year when acting head Sean Duffy signed a policy directive in July to encourage third parties to submit official proposals.
