The Russian war in Ukraine is an abominable humanitarian catastrophe, and it poses many risks for the region and the wider world. Among those is the growing risk that the chaos up-ends agriculture on a large scale—affecting markets for oil seeds, wheat, and other cereal grains, as well as fertilizers derived from natural gas, with effects that ripple across the world. It is too early to tell whether the disruption will be enough to cause a global food calamity, though there are ominous signs.
