Pleasant Valley Fire Department Chief Robert Stinson pulled his flatbed pickup up to a largely empty airport hangar in New York a decade ago. Since 2002, it had been the grim reliquary of curated pieces of the World Trade Center, leveled during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. In 2010, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey began distributing the relics to fire departments, municipalities, and schools. But by 2016, some 2,600 parts and portions had been distributed to organizations and, once inside the hangar, Stinson saw there was little left. […]
