In his first published work of fiction, the British writer and futurist Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) shot to literary fame, marking the beginning of a career that would rival his celebrated French predecessor, author Jules Verne. Their popular works would practically corner the market on sci-fi film adaptations in the 20th century.
