In this Medium article, experiential specialist Rolf Nelson introduces a nice image to explain how we react to new technology: the pendulum. According to the author, whenever new technology appears, the pendulum swings heavily to one side — at least for some people. This means that a lot of people embrace it right out of the gate, adopt it and abuse it in an attempt to figure it out.

Other people actively reject the technology, swinging the pendulum to the other side. There’s a third group, the ones who wait, simply because they don’t know about the new tech or because they don’t care about it either way. The pendulum swings back and forth between the two extremes until it finally settles in its downward position: when all the abuse is done, when people finally figure the new technology out and when its users find ways to fit the new tech into their everyday lives.
